ZTE and China Telecom Introduce ‘Smart Giga 5G Powered Metro’ in Shanghai

ZTE Corporation, a leading provider of information and communication technology solutions, has partnered with China Telecom’s Shanghai branch to bring the ‘Smart Giga 5G Powered Metro’ to Shanghai Metro Line 4. This innovative solution provides a gigabit experience to metro passengers, enabling HD film streaming for all users simultaneously without internet slowdown.

The ‘Smart Giga 5G Powered Metro’ offers a peak rate exceeding 2.1Gbps and an average rate of 1.7Gbps+, setting a new standard for metro connectivity. It also serves as a digital foundation for smart metro operations.

One of the major challenges in the industry is enhancing 5G network coverage and improving the user experience in metro environments. The conventional LCX coverage solution faces difficulties due to signal attenuation caused by metal carriages and the Doppler effect resulting from train movement. Additionally, limited deployment space restricts cell capacity, leading to low throughput during peak traffic hours.

To address these challenges, China Telecom’s Shanghai branch has collaborated with ZTE to build the ‘Smart Giga 5G Powered Metro’ with ‘Metro 5G coverage with vehicle-mounted equipment + high-speed 5G backhaul’. The metro carriages are equipped with a complete 5G indoor coverage system using ZTE’s BBU + pRRU two-level architecture. 5G AAUs deployed in tunnels serve as high-speed backhaul, ensuring consistent 5G signals and providing high-speed experiences for mobile users.

The deployment of this solution on Shanghai Metro Line 4 brings several benefits. Firstly, it significantly improves the user experience, offering speeds of up to 2.1Gbps and an average speed of 1.7Gbps, nearly three times faster than the traditional LCX solution. It also delivers a unified network that caters to both mobile users and smart metro operations, supporting the development of smart cities. Furthermore, this solution is cost-effective and sustainable, with operators saving approximately 20% of investment compared to the traditional LCX solution. It also streamlines network deployment by eliminating the need to lay LCX, reducing complexity and construction time.

The ‘Smart Giga 5G Powered Metro’ represents ZTE and China Telecom’s dedication to developing passenger-focused and service-focused smart metro applications. They will continue to collaborate in various fields, focusing on new-generation technologies such as industrial internet, Internet of Things, cloud computing, big data, and artificial intelligence.
