The Haryana Government Claims NASA Images Show More Stubble Burning in Punjab than in Haryana

The Haryana government has released images from NASA that purportedly show a significantly higher number of stubble burning incidents in Punjab compared to Haryana. The pictures were taken on October 25 and 26. This move comes in response to Punjab’s claim that the number of stubble burning incidents had decreased by 53% between September 15 and October 25 compared to the same period last year. Punjab reported 5,798 incidents last year, while this year it was 2,704.

The Punjab government, led by AAP’s Bhagwant Mann, attributed this reduction to the timely distribution of machines, utilization of idle machines, efforts to maximize the utilization of stubble in various industries, and awareness programs.

However, the release of these images has sparked a political dispute between the BJP and AAP. The AAP has accused the BJP government in Haryana of a threefold increase in stubble-burning cases, while the BJP accuses the AAP-led Delhi government of trying to cover up for Punjab. The National Green Tribunal has also issued notices to the Punjab chief secretary and member secretary of the Central Pollution Control Board in relation to this issue.

Jawahar Yadav, the OSD of Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, stated that the NASA images clearly indicate that more stubble burning incidents occur in Punjab compared to Haryana. He raised suspicions about Arvind Kejriwal’s silence regarding the NASA data and accused him of alleging that Indian agencies do not provide pollution data. Yadav further criticized the Punjab government and claimed that Kejriwal’s true face has been exposed to the public.

In the midst of this controversy, Delhi continues to suffer from poor air quality, with the air quality index (AQI) in the ‘poor’ category for the fifth consecutive day. The situation is predicted to worsen in the coming days, with the AQI expected to deteriorate to the ‘very poor’ category on Saturday, according to the Centre’s Air Quality Early Warning System.
