Reliance Jio Prepares for Satellite Services

Reliance Jio, the Indian telecommunications company, has successfully demonstrated India’s first satellite-based giga fiber service at the India Mobile Congress (IMC) held in 2023. The technology, called JioSpaceFiber, aims to provide high-speed broadband services to previously unreachable areas in India at affordable prices.

Jio believes that the Indian government should utilize the Universal Services Obligation Fund (USOF), a fund worth ₹75,700 crore, to make devices and services more accessible and affordable for individuals. The company emphasizes the importance of evolving policies to be in line with technological advancements and service capabilities.

Regarding the allocation of spectrum, Jio advocates for an auction-based approach rather than administrative allocation. They argue that satellite technology has evolved to become a complementary solution to 4G and 5G rather than a different technology altogether.

Reliance Jio expresses interest in purchasing spectrum when auctions become available. They highlight the need for India to have more spectrum, as the country currently has significantly less spectrum compared to other nations with similar subscriber numbers. Jio believes that India’s policies should not simply mimic those of other countries, but should be tailored to suit India’s specific needs as a tier 1 plus nation.

Addressing concerns about the affordability of satellite services, Jio suggests utilizing the USOF to provide devices and services to those who cannot afford them. They propose reducing the license fee for telecom operators and using the funds for continued investment in the industry.

Jio also emphasizes the importance of considering the cost of devices in promoting adoption. While 4G and 5G devices are becoming more affordable, Jio believes it is crucial not to forget the millions of individuals still using 2G. They emphasize the need to bring everyone along on the digital journey and democratize access to communication, connectivity, and AI.

In conclusion, Reliance Jio is actively preparing for the launch of satellite services and advocates for the use of auction-based spectrum allocation, affordable service plans, and the utilization of funds to support digital connectivity for all individuals in India.
