Reliance Jio, a leading telecom operator in India, has successfully deployed 800,000 5G cells across the country within a span of 300 days. This achievement has made Jio a global case study in fast deployment, according to Shyam Mardikar, President and Group CTO Mobility of Reliance Jio.

Mardikar emphasized that this remarkable feat was made possible due to the utilization of autonomous systems, correlation engines, machine learning algorithms, and capabilities that not only understand the product but also comprehend the demand, devices, and traffic patterns. The fully automated process allowed for efficient construction of the 5G infrastructure.

During the Digital Telco Summit – 2023 organized by ETTelecom and the TRAI Center for Studies and Research, Mardikar highlighted the increased flexibility and programmability of networks, which can help telecom operators optimize services based on customer requirements.

He also stressed the importance of digital transformation in enhancing customer experiences and creating demand in real-time. This requires deep connectivity, both indoor and outdoor, along with a significant amount of spectrum.

Mardikar mentioned the critical role of technologies such as Big Data suite, machine learning, and automation in managing network quality of service and security. He drew an analogy between this aspect of digital transformation and a self-driving car, indicating the need for an automatic and hyperactive system to manage the 800,000 5G cells.

Furthermore, Mardikar emphasized the significance of product management, technological endurance, security, and going beyond connectivity to achieve comprehensive digital transformation.

Reliance Jio’s 5G standalone (SA) network, branded as Jio True 5G, is already operational in more than 6,000 cities and towns. The company aims to complete the nationwide rollout by December 2023.
