Pennsylvania Department of Aging Hosts Listening Stations to Gather Input for 10-Year Plan

The Pennsylvania Department of Aging is hosting listening stations in every county to gather feedback and determine the key areas of focus for a 10-year master plan to support older adults. Transportation emerged as a major concern during the listening session held in Blair County at the Southern Blair Senior Center in East Freedom.

Concerns were raised about the lack of transportation options in the evenings for individuals in the community. Public transportation services currently operate until around 6 p.m., creating challenges for older adults and individuals with disabilities who wish to attend social events or complete their shopping.

Another issue discussed by Blair seniors was the limited availability of safe sidewalks for older adults. Many attendees highlighted broken or uneven sidewalks, with tree roots causing further hazards. This poses difficulties for individuals who rely on walking to get around.

Access to healthcare and communications also emerged as key topics of discussion at the listening session. Attendees expressed concern about the high cost of internet services, which puts a strain on those with fixed incomes from social security. They emphasized that access to the internet is seen as a luxury rather than a necessity, making it unaffordable for many older adults.

The 10-year master plan, expected to be published by February 1, 2024, will outline both immediate actions that can be taken and long-term goals. The Department of Aging aims to identify pragmatic solutions to address the issues raised during the listening sessions.

Listening sessions will continue to be held throughout August and September. Some counties have yet to announce their scheduled dates. The next session will be conducted virtually on Friday morning.
