North Korea’s Second Attempt to Launch Spy Satellite Fails Again

North Korea made a second unsuccessful attempt to launch a spy satellite, but it plans to try again in October. The failed launch led Japan to issue a “J-alert” and order some residents to evacuate to safe places as the North Korean rocket flew over its southernmost islands. The North’s space agency stated that it used the new-type carrier rocket Chollima-1 to put the reconnaissance satellite Malligyong-1 into orbit. The first and second stages of the rocket’s flight were normal, but an error in the emergency blasting system during the third-stage flight caused the launch to fail.

The National Aerospace Development Administration announced that it would conduct a third launch attempt in October after studying the cause of the failure. Experts believe that despite this setback, North Korea remains committed to acquiring a spy satellite and will continue to pursue its long-term ambitions.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed the North’s failed launch and stated that it violated U.N. Security Council resolutions. Japan’s chief Cabinet secretary called the launch a threat to peace and stability. In response, South Korea plans to strengthen trilateral cooperation with the United States and Japan to obstruct North Korea’s hacking and smuggling activities, which fund its weapons programs in violation of U.N. sanctions.

North Korea’s first launch attempt also ended in failure, with the rocket crashing into the sea. The North quickly acknowledged the failure, stating that the rocket lost thrust between launch stages. Experts believe that North Korea will make another attempt in October and that the failure is merely a temporary setback.

North Korea has been conducting numerous missile tests this year, aiming to bolster its nuclear deterrent and modernize its weapons arsenal. However, it still faces technological challenges before obtaining functioning nuclear missiles. The U.N. Security Council has been divided about imposing further sanctions due to opposition from Russia and China.
