Maersk Partners with Starlink to Provide High-Speed Internet to Container Vessels

A.P. Moller – Maersk, a leading container logistics company, has announced a strategic collaboration with Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite internet constellation. The partnership aims to equip Maersk’s fleet of over 330 container vessels with cutting-edge Starlink technology, providing high-speed internet capabilities exceeding 200 Mbps. The technology is expected to be fully operational by Q1 2024.

The incorporation of Starlink internet services will greatly enhance internet speed and reduce latency for Maersk’s seafaring operations. This improvement is anticipated to have significant benefits for both crew members and the overall business operations of the company. The partnership will support the well-being of crew members by enabling them to stay connected with their loved ones while at sea. Additionally, it will promote the expansion of seamless cloud solutions, facilitating the digitalization of vessel operations.

The pilot phase of the collaboration, which involved more than 30 Maersk vessels testing Starlink technology, received overwhelmingly positive feedback from the crew members. The shift toward high-speed, low-latency internet services not only promises improved crew welfare through high-definition video calls and seamless streaming but also offers potential cost-saving measures by leveraging cloud-based applications and enabling remote support and vessel inspections.

Jonathan Hofeller, SpaceX’s Vice President of Starlink Commercial Sales, highlighted the significance of this collaboration. He emphasized how Starlink’s high-speed broadband, facilitated by the advanced satellite internet constellation, will boost efficiency through seamless connectivity for A.P. Moller – Maersk’s vessels, no matter their location.

The synergy between Starlink’s mission to create global connectivity and Maersk’s ambition to address the challenges of high-seas connectivity is evident in this partnership. This ambitious venture is expected to redefine maritime connectivity and operational efficiency on a global scale.
