Huawei Mate 60 Series to Potentially Support Voice Calling via Satellite

The Huawei Mate 50 series, released last year, had the capability to send messages through satellite but could not make calls. However, Huawei is now working on the Mate 60 series, which is expected to have satellite connectivity that might even support voice calling, thanks to new power amplifier (PA) chips.

These PA chips, specifically designed for the Tiantong-1 satellite mobile communication system, are critical to devices utilizing satellite features. Currently integrated into Huawei’s Mate X3 and P60 series, which can already perform two-way satellite communication via SMS, these chips amplify the high-frequency signal from the communication integrated circuit (RF-IC) and supply it to the antenna at the required output level. This amplification process enables effective satellite communication, including voice calls.

The PA chips for the Huawei Mate 60 series are rumored to be produced by a Chinese chipmaker instead of Huawei itself. While it is not confirmed, the inclusion of these chips suggests that the upcoming Mate 60 smartphones may indeed support voice calling through satellite connectivity, a first for smartphones. In comparison, Apple’s iPhone 14 series only supports emergency SOS calls via satellite.

Satellite connectivity on phones is an emerging technology, and manufacturers are eager to implement it. If you want to learn more about this technology, we have an explainer for you.
