Government to Use Satellite Internet as Temporary Solution for Poor Internet Access

The Malaysian government has decided to utilize the services of satellite internet providers, such as Starlink, in areas with inadequate internet access. Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil stated that this is a temporary solution while long-term solutions are being implemented.

Satellite internet is considered suitable as a temporary solution due to its plug-and-play capability, fast internet speed, and reasonable price. Malaysia currently has four satellite internet service providers, including Starlink.

Fahmi mentioned that the decision to use satellite internet is not commercial but rather serves the purpose of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

The government is also discussing the expansion of satellite internet technology to schools and health clinics in Sabah and Sarawak. Fahmi is in communication with the Health Minister, Education Minister, and the Rural and Regional Development Minister regarding this matter.

In July, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced plans to install 40 satellite internet devices from Starlink at higher education institutions nationwide. This initiative aims to assist students with unreliable internet connectivity during their studies.

Furthermore, several telecommunication service providers will offer a 5G Rahmah internet package at a more affordable price or with increased data capacity. The base price for this package is RM60, and it is expected to be available from August 31. The package includes a Samsung A14 5G or Honor 90 Lite 5G phone, along with a 60GB data plan.

These measures are part of the government’s efforts to enhance internet access and connectivity throughout the country.
