Destruction Revealed in Gaza Through Satellite Images

Satellite images have revealed the extensive destruction caused by Israeli airstrikes in Gaza over the past three weeks. The images, released by space technology company Maxar, showcase the aftermath of the Israeli Air Force’s (IAF) airstrikes, which were carried out in response to an attack by Hamas militants on October 7. The attack resulted in the death of 1400 people and the hostage-taking of over 200 individuals.

According to Reuters, as of Thursday, the Israeli strikes have claimed the lives of at least 6,500 people, as Gaza authorities report. There is growing anticipation of an Israeli invasion of the strip, aimed at eradicating Hamas’ leadership.

The Maxar images depict the city of Beit Hanoun on October 10, three days after the Hamas attack, and compare it to an image taken on October 21. The later image reveals that over 11 days, residential blocks have been completely flattened. Similar scenes of destruction are seen in before and after images from Izbat Beit Hanoun.

In another comparison, an aerial view of Atatra in northern Gaza shows rows of apartment blocks taken on May 11, which is contrasted with an image from the same area and altitude on October 21. This later image exhibits the extent to which the apartment blocks were leveled by Israel’s bombardments.

Additional photos taken from above the Al Shati Refugee Camp in Gaza show the site on May 11 compared to last week, October 21. These photos highlight the significant destruction caused to buildings and roads in the area.

The Israeli Air Force has been targeting and destroying various sites, including weapons depots and Hamas tunnels. Brigadier General Omer Tishler, the IAF’s chief of staff, stated that his forces have been continuously bombing Hamas targets “around the clock” without any distinction between day and night.

Meanwhile, Israel announced that its airstrikes had targeted 250 Hamas sites in the past 24 hours, including tunnels and rocket launchers. The country’s ground forces also made a substantial push into Gaza on Wednesday night. In response, rockets were fired on central Israel from Gaza, resulting in air raid sirens sounding across the country. Reports of air defense interceptions were made, and social media users shared images of what appeared to be a rocket fragment hitting a building in Petah Tikva, near Tel Aviv.

Israel’s objective is to attack Hamas targets in preparation for an expected ground invasion, aimed at eliminating the group’s leadership and rescuing the hostages from nearly two dozen countries. While the United States and several other countries are urging Israel to delay the invasion, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that Israel is still preparing for it.
