Bright Lights Moving Across the Sky in Chattanooga and North Georgia

Bright lights were spotted moving in a straight line across the sky in the Chattanooga and North Georgia areas on Monday night, catching the attention of many residents. Erica Sahaj, a Signal Mountain resident, noticed the lights while watering her plants around 10 p.m. At first, she mistook them for stars in the Orion’s Belt constellation, but soon realized that they were actually moving.

Upon further research, Sahaj discovered that these lights were Starlink satellites, created and launched by SpaceX, the company owned by Elon Musk. Starlink aims to provide broadband internet access through a network of low orbit satellites. As SpaceX continues to launch more satellites for their network, sightings like these will become more common.

John Hart, the director of the James A. Smith Planetarium in Chickamauga, Georgia, explains that these satellites can often be mistaken for UFOs. He clarifies that the lights seen are actually sunlight reflecting off the surfaces of the satellites as they orbit the Earth.

For the best views of astronomical phenomena like these, Hart recommends finding locations that are high in altitude and away from heavily populated areas. In about a week, the Perseid meteor shower will reach its peak, offering people a chance to witness this annual astronomical event.
