A Chaplain’s Dedication to Honoring Deceased Veterans

A Roman Catholic deacon finished prayers at a recent burial service in Hillcrest, and a man in a Naval uniform stepped forward. This chaplain, accompanied by an honor guard of more than a dozen other service members, was ready to offer prayer and carry out the military honors for the deceased veteran.

With a calm voice, the chaplain prepared those in attendance for the gunfire salute that followed. After the rifles cracked, the haunting melody of “Taps” filled the air. Finally, a folded American flag was presented with precision to the family of the deceased. It is a short but emotional service that pays tribute to the service and sacrifice of the fallen.

Walter Loveless, a retired Navy Chief Petty Officer, serves as the chaplain and president of the Broome County Veterans Memorial Association. Loveless has been leading the Honor Guard at burial services for more than 11 years. He recalls being moved by the ceremony, especially when family members start crying during his prayer. Loveless believes it is important to provide support and comfort to grieving families, and to honor and thank deceased veterans for their service.

As a retired Navy officer, Loveless enjoys wearing his formal uniform during services for Navy veterans, but he dons a less formal uniform when honoring veterans from other branches of the military. Loveless’s dedication to the Honor Guard was inspired by a TV report about the need for volunteers. His wife encouraged him to get involved, and he reached out to others who had uniforms or were willing to obtain them.

Loveless understands the significance of being present at burial services, as sometimes the honor guard, the funeral director, and the clergy are the only ones attending. He feels saddened when no one else shows up and recognizes the importance of celebrating the lives of deceased veterans.

The members of the honor guard range in age from their late 50s to their 90s, and a dozen or more participate in each ceremony. Most services include a universal Christian prayer, which Loveless believes is vital to comforting the grieving families and connecting with his own Catholic faith. He emphasizes the transition from this life to the next and the importance of remaining faithful to God and each other.

In his role as chaplain, Loveless aims to ensure that no veteran is laid to rest without the honor and gratitude they deserve. Whether it is a large service or a small gathering, Loveless and the honor guard stand ready to give a final salute to those who have served our country.
