Wi-Fi Services Provider to Construction Sites Rescued Amid Customer Losses

Northern-based company Trench Networks, known for providing innovative Wi-Fi services to construction sites, has been saved from financial difficulties caused by the collapse of high-profile customers. The company specializes in offering remote internet access to construction sites that lack the necessary infrastructure. However, it faced cash flow problems after regional contractors such as Tolent and Metnor Construction went bankrupt earlier this year.

To resolve the situation, Trench Networks has been acquired by Northern Telecommunications, safeguarding the jobs of its seven employees. The value of the sale has not been disclosed. The founder and director of Trench Networks, Kevin Lattimer, has been commended by insolvency experts for his quick action in response to the challenges.

Earlier this year, the collapse of major construction companies led to Trench Networks losing a number of projects it was working on, resulting in bad debts and decreased turnover. These losses severely impacted the company’s cash flow and led to arrears with creditors. As a result, the company sought assistance from FRP, who facilitated the sale process.

Andrew Haslam, joint administrator and partner of FRP Advisory Trading Limited, highlighted the proactive approach taken by Trench Networks, which allowed for multiple options to be considered. This approach facilitated a successful marketing exercise, generating significant interest from potential buyers. Ultimately, a trade purchaser was identified, and a contract was negotiated to sell the business and save the employees.

In 2021, Trench Networks received a £500,000 investment from the North East Venture Fund, supported by the European Regional Development Fund and managed by Mercia. This marked the fourth injection of funds into Trench Networks by the Fund, totaling £1 million at the time. The company’s Outpost connection device revolutionized how construction firms access internet and phone services on-site and has been utilized in major projects such as the £800 million NOMA neighborhood in Manchester and the Vaccines Manufacturing and Innovation Centre in Oxfordshire.

The technology used by Trench Networks aggregates connections from various mobile networks to provide reliable internet services. It has also been implemented in remote locations including wind farms and electric vehicle charging stations. Additionally, the company introduced a “Wi-Fi SOS” service to assist businesses experiencing connectivity issues or relocating to areas with limited connectivity.
