Varėna Border Patrol Detains Five Illegal Migrants and Their Driver
The State Border Guard Service (SBGS) has reported that Varėna border patrol officers have detained five illegal migrants from India and Bangladesh, as well as their Latvian driver.
On Tuesday after midnight, SBGS officers from the Kalvarija frontier unit, who were carrying out illegal migration prevention and control activities along the Marijampolė-Suwalki road near the village of Salaperaugis in the Kalvarija municipality, stopped a BMW car.
The 52-year-old Latvian citizen was behind the wheel of the car with Latvian license plates. He presented flawless identification documents to the border patrol officers and was allowed to proceed. However, the five passengers in the car raised suspicions. None of them had any identification documents but claimed to be citizens of India and Bangladesh.
During the investigation, it was revealed that they were 17, 18, 20, and 32-year-old Indian citizens, along with a 31-year-old Bangladeshi national. They had illegally crossed the border from Belarus into Latvia and then intended to travel via Lithuania to Poland, and from there to one of the Western European countries. However, their plans were unexpectedly disrupted by Lithuanian border patrol officers.
The driver and the passengers were detained by SBGS officers. A pre-trial investigation into the illegal transportation of individuals across the state border has been initiated by the Varėna border patrol, under the supervision of a prosecutor from the 2nd Criminal Prosecution Department of the Kaunas Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
This offense is punishable by a term of imprisonment of up to eight years.
The detained migrants are temporarily accommodated in one of the SBGS facilities. Once the circumstances of the incident have been clarified, the group of five will be handed over to Latvian border guards. The driver of the vehicle will face legal consequences.
