Ukraine Shoots Down Russian Ka-52 Attack Helicopters, Citing Foreign Components

Ukrainian forces have been successful in shooting down Russian Ka-52 attack helicopters and a senior Ukrainian official argues that these aircrafts’ production needs to be cut off. In recent engagements, Ukraine’s military downed two Ka-52s in separate incidents in the occupied Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk regions. The head of Ukraine’s presidential office, Andriy Yermak, stated that the helicopters contain high-tech components from countries in the West and Asia. He listed several parts needed for construction and said that Russia cannot produce such technology and relies on imports. Yermak called for strengthened sanctions against Russia and stated that the Russian military-industrial complex should not have access to technology. Ukraine has been urging its supporters to strengthen punitive measures against Russia and isolate Moscow further. It is not the first time that Russia has been caught using foreign parts in its weaponry.
Ukrainian investigators have found Western-produced hardware in Iranian-made drones that Russia has been using to attack Ukraine. Despite their struggles against these assets, Ukrainian forces have found success in shooting down the Ka-52 helicopters. In previous intelligence updates, the UK stated that Russia had gained a temporary advantage in southern Ukraine with these highly capable gunships. However, recent reports indicate an improved air-defense capability among front-line Ukrainian forces. Ukraine’s defense ministry reported the destruction of a Ka-52 by an anti-aircraft missile unit near Bakhmut in the eastern Donetsk region. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine also confirmed the interception of the two helicopters mentioned by Yermak. According to open-source analysis and Western intelligence estimates, Russia has lost at least 41 Ka-52 helicopters since the beginning of the full-scale war.
