U.S. FBI Warns of North Korean Cybercriminals Attempting to Cash Out Stolen Cryptocurrency

The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has issued a warning regarding the potential cashing out of stolen cryptocurrency worth over million by threat actors linked to North Korea. The FBI attributed the recent blockchain activity to an adversary known as TraderTraitor, also referred to as Jade Sleet. According to the FBI’s investigation, the group has moved approximately 1,580 bitcoin from various cryptocurrency heists within the past 24 hours. The stolen funds are currently being held in six different wallets.

North Korea has a history of blurring the lines between cyber warfare, espionage, and financial crime. TraderTraitor, specifically, has been connected to a string of attacks on blockchain and cryptocurrency exchanges. Their aim is to steal digital assets and generate illicit revenue for the nation, which has been heavily impacted by economic sanctions.

Some notable attacks attributed to TraderTraitor include the theft of million from Alphapo on June 22, 2023, the theft of million from CoinsPaid on the same day, and the theft of 0 million from Atomic Wallet on June 2, 2023. The group has also targeted Sky Mavis’ Ronin Network and Harmony Horizon Bridge in previous attacks.

The activities of TraderTraitor often overlap with another North Korean group called APT38, also known as BlueNoroff or Stardust Chollima. APT38 is part of the larger Lazarus constellation. Recently, Mandiant, a company owned by Google, connected TraderTraitor to UNC4899, a hacking crew responsible for the JumpCloud hack in late June 2023.

Blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs has estimated that North Korean hackers have stolen over billion in cryptocurrencies since 2018. In 2023 alone, the stolen amount is believed to be around 0 million. The FBI advises private sector entities to carefully analyze the blockchain data associated with the mentioned addresses and remain vigilant against engaging in transactions directly linked to or derived from those addresses.
