South Korea Urges North Korea to Cancel Satellite Launch

South Korea has urged North Korea to abandon its satellite launch plan, calling it an “illegal act” due to the use of prohibited ballistic projectile technology. The Unification Ministry in South Korea stated that the satellite launch is a clear violation of UN Security Council resolutions.

On Tuesday, North Korea notified Japan’s Coast Guard about its plans to launch a satellite into space between August 24 and August 31. The satellite’s trajectory would pass over the Yellow Sea, East China Sea, and the Pacific Ocean.

Japan has taken precautions in response to the announcement, mobilizing ships and activating its PAC-3 projectile defense system in case the satellite lands within its territory. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida issued a statement urging North Korea to cancel the launch. Japan is collaborating with South Korea and the United States to gather more information.

The satellite launch declaration comes amid the ongoing joint military exercises between the US and South Korea. The exercises, named Ulchi Freedom Shield, are a response to North Korea’s nuclear capabilities and will continue until August 31.

North Korea strongly criticizes the military drills and warns of “overwhelming” actions if they involve a “nuclear provocation.” The country’s state news agency, KCNA, expressed concern that the recent trilateral summit at Camp David between the US, South Korea, and Japan was a platform for “nuclear war provocation.”

The situation has prompted North Korea to consider taking offensive and overwhelming action. The international community remains concerned about the potential escalation of tensions on the Korean peninsula.
