South Korea Conducts Air Raid Exercise Amidst North Korea’s Rocket Launch

South Korea recently held its first air raid exercise in six years as a response to North Korea’s planned launch of a space rocket carrying a satellite. The exercise involved the activation of civil defense sirens across the country and the mobilization of 216 vehicles to simulate the evacuation of civilians during emergency situations.

Around 480 multiuse facilities participated in the drill, while essential services such as hospitals, subways, trains, aircraft, and ferry services continued to function without disruption. However, the exercise did not take place in the 57 regions that had been designated as special disaster zones due to heavy rainfall and Typhoon Khanun last month.

In previous years, approximately 17,000 sites, including basement areas of apartments and subway stations, had been assigned as shelters for defense drills. The recent 20-minute air raid exercise was part of the four-day Ulchi civil defense training, which coincided with a joint military maneuver known as the Ulchi Freedom Shield, involving South Korea and the United States.

The exercise aims to enhance South Korea’s readiness and preparedness for potential threats and emergencies. It also serves as a response to North Korea’s continued missile and nuclear activities. The rocket launch by North Korea, seen as a violation of international sanctions, has raised concerns among its neighboring countries and the international community.

South Korea remains committed to the safety and security of its citizens, and exercises such as these play a crucial role in maintaining a state of readiness and ensuring effective response in the event of an actual emergency or attack.
