Russia Builds New Military Bases Despite Losses in Ukraine

Satellite images have revealed Russia’s ongoing efforts to construct new military bases despite the devastating losses suffered in the war with Ukraine. Anton Gerashchenko, an advisor to the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, disclosed the information through his affiliation with an investigative journalism unit called Схеми. The unit has identified significant changes in the territories of Russian military plants through satellite imagery.

One notable example is the Kazan Aviation Plant, where missile launchers like Tu-22m3s and Tu-160s are manufactured. The development of this plant has been ongoing, with accelerated construction work taking place last year and its completion this year. Another base, the Irkutsk Aviation Plant, has also been established for the production and repair of Su-30 fighters. Recent additions include a hangar with airfield access, and the construction of a similar facility is expected to be finalized this year.

These facilities may also serve purposes beyond military use, as aviation expert Khrapchinsky suggests that they can be employed for the repair of civilian aircraft like the Sukhoi Superjet.

In the midst of these developments, the UN National Security Council spokesman, John Kirby, remarked yesterday on Moscow’s significant losses during its latest offensive in Ukraine. Around 125 Russian armored vehicles were reported to have been lost near Avdiivka, located in eastern Donetsk. Kirby also noted a decline in Russian forces’ morale. Despite these setbacks, he pessimistically predicted that Russia’s attacks would escalate.

Russia’s persistence in constructing new military bases underscores its commitment to strengthen its military capabilities, despite the setbacks it has faced in the conflict with Ukraine.
