Reliance Jio Showcases JioSpaceFiber: India’s First Satellite-Based Gigabit Broadband Service

Reliance Jio has unveiled JioSpaceFiber, India’s first satellite-based gigabit broadband service. The service aims to provide high-speed internet to previously inaccessible areas across the country. The demonstration of this groundbreaking technology took place at the India Mobile Congress.

Jio already offers high-speed broadband through JioFiber and JioAirFiber to over 450 million consumers in India. With the addition of JioSpaceFiber, the company aims to ensure that every household in India has access to digital services, irrespective of their location. Moreover, this new service will also contribute to the expansion of Jio’s True5G network in remote parts of the nation.

To deliver gigabit, fiber-like services from space, Jio is collaborating with SES, utilizing the latest medium earth orbit (MEO) satellite technology. By leveraging SES’s O3b and the new O3b mPOWER satellites, Jio can provide reliable and affordable broadband coverage throughout the entire country.

As a demonstration of its capabilities, JioSpaceFiber has already been successfully connected to four remote locations in India: Gir Gujarat, Korba Chattisgarh, Nabrangpur Odissa, and ONGC-Jorhat Assam.

Akash Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, emphasized that JioSpaceFiber will enable every individual to participate in the new digital society, granting them gigabit access to essential online government, education, health, and entertainment services.

John-Paul Hemingway, Chief Strategy Officer at SES, expressed his enthusiasm for supporting the Indian Government’s Digital India initiative and the potential for digital transformation even in rural areas of the country. He highlighted the unique solution provided by SES and Jio, which aims to deliver multiple gigabits per second of throughput to any location in India.

Reliance Jio’s JioSpaceFiber represents a significant step towards bridging the digital divide in India and ensuring that all citizens have access to high-speed internet services. With this innovative satellite-based broadband service, Jio aims to empower millions of homes and businesses that are yet to be connected, enabling them to fully participate in the new digital era.
