Reliance Jio Introduces JioSpaceFiber to Connect Remote Areas in India

Reliance Jio, in partnership with SES, a satellite telecommunications network provider based in Luxembourg, has successfully introduced JioSpaceFiber, India’s first satellite-based giga-fiber service. This innovative service aims to provide high-speed and cost-effective internet connectivity to remote and inaccessible areas across the country.

During the ‘India Mobile Congress 2023,’ Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially unveiled JioSpaceFiber. It harnesses the power of advanced medium earth orbit (MEO) satellite technology to expand the digital landscape and connect millions of individuals who currently lack access.

Akash Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd, highlighted the significance of this service by stating that it enables individuals across India to fully participate in the digital society. JioSpaceFiber will provide access to essential online government services, education, healthcare, and entertainment at gigabit speeds.

Reliance Jio already serves over 450 million consumers with high-speed broadband fixed-line and wireless services. The introduction of the satellite network, powered by SES, will not only bring connectivity to remote regions but also enhance the mobile backhaul capacity, further strengthening the reach of Jio True5G in even the most secluded parts of the country.

Several remote locations in India, including Gir in Gujarat, Korba in Chhattisgarh, Nabarangpur in Odisha, and ONGC-Jorhat in Assam, have already been connected through JioSpaceFiber. This initiative aligns with the government’s ‘Digital India’ vision, providing multiple gigabits per second of throughput to any location in the country.

John-Paul Hemingway, Chief Strategy Officer at SES, expressed their commitment to supporting India’s digital transformation. They are determined to deliver fiber-like services from space, even to the most rural areas of the country.
