North Korea Plans to Launch Military Satellite Despite Previous Failure

North Korea has notified Japan of its intention to launch a military satellite in the next few days. This comes after the country’s attempt earlier this year ended in failure when the satellite crashed into the sea. The Japanese Prime Minister, Fumio Kishida, has instructed his government to work with the United States, South Korea, and other nations to urge North Korea to cancel the launch.

The Japan Coast Guard has designated three danger areas for the launch, which is scheduled to take place between August 24 and 31. These areas include the Yellow Sea, East China Sea, and the waters east of the Philippines’s Luzon island.

In May, North Korea launched its first military reconnaissance satellite, but the mission was unsuccessful due to instability in the engine and fuel system. This launch was strongly condemned by Japan, the US, and South Korea as a violation of United Nations resolutions.

Analysts have noted that there is a significant overlap between the development of intercontinental ballistic missiles and space launch capabilities. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has prioritized the development of a military spy satellite as part of the country’s military modernization plan.

South Korea retrieved debris from the previous launch and found that the satellite had no military utility. This upcoming launch will be North Korea’s sixth attempt to put a satellite into orbit and the first since 2016.
