How to Enable and Use the Microsoft Edge VPN for Privacy and Security

If you’re looking to protect your privacy and security while browsing on a public network, you can take advantage of the Microsoft Edge VPN. This free Virtual Private Network offered by Microsoft in the Edge browser comes with added security and privacy benefits.

Enabling and using the Microsoft Edge VPN is a simple process. To get started, launch the Microsoft Edge browser on your desktop. Then, click on the Settings and more button (three-dot icon) located in the top right corner of the browser. From the menu that appears, select Settings.

In the left column, choose “Privacy, search, and services” and scroll down until you find the Security section. Toggle on the switch for “Microsoft Secure Network” to enable the VPN. You can choose between two VPN modes: “Select Sites” or “Optimized.” The Optimized option is recommended as it enables the VPN on public settings and non-secure networks and sites.

It’s worth noting that you must be signed in with your Microsoft account for the VPN to work. If you’re not signed in, you won’t see the VPN section in Settings.

Once the VPN is enabled, it reroutes your traffic through a remote server, making it more challenging for websites and third-party services to monitor your activity. The Edge VPN also allows you to manually manage which sites have access to the VPN. You can add specific sites that you always want to use the VPN for and remove or edit sites from the list.

Managing your Microsoft Edge VPN settings is also easy. Simply click on the Browser essentials button (heart icon) located in the top right corner next to the address bar and the three-dot menu button. Scroll to the bottom of the menu and find the Microsoft Edge Secure Network section to toggle the VPN on or off and set it to use the VPN feature on the current site you’re viewing.

It’s important to note that the Edge VPN has limitations, offering only 5GB of data per month. Therefore, it might not be a permanent solution for heavy internet users. If you require a full-time VPN, you may want to consider subscribing to a third-party service like Private Internet Access (PIA). Additionally, as of now, the Edge VPN is only available for desktop users of Windows 10 or 11.

Overall, the Microsoft Edge VPN provides an extra layer of online security and privacy, especially when using public Wi-Fi networks. While it may not be suitable for heavy browsing or streaming, it is a convenient option for occasional use. Microsoft is continuously working on improving and expanding the VPN’s capabilities, so it may offer more data in the future.
