High-Speed Internet Access Project Reaches Completion in Southwestern Vermont

The universal high-speed internet access project in Southwestern Vermont has reached 99 percent of customers across the county as it wraps up its second phase. The project, now in its second year, is a collaboration between the Southern Vermont Communications Union District (CUD) and Consolidated Communications Inc.

The third phase, scheduled for next year, will focus on bringing fiberoptic cable to 16 of the region’s most remote homes. The completion of the project’s second phase was celebrated at an event held at Bromley Mountain Ski Area’s Wild Board Tavern, with speeches from U.S. Sen. Peter Welch, Southern Vermont CUD Executive Director Eric Hatch, and Southwestern Vermont Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Matt Harrington.

The project has connected approximately 2,400 previously unserved homes and installed 635 miles of fiber optic cable in 14 towns. This expansion is expected to have a positive impact on the region’s economy, as well as provide educational benefits. The improved infrastructure will allow businesses to grow and thrive and provide residents with access to a wide range of opportunities.

According to a member survey conducted by the Southwestern Vermont Chamber of Commerce, access to high-speed internet was previously cited as a problem by 41 percent of respondents. However, this year, only 18 percent identified internet access as an issue, indicating the positive impact of the high-speed internet rollout on local businesses.

The project’s completion also addresses the issue of digital equity, ensuring that all residents, regardless of their location, have access to essential online services. It highlights the importance of cooperation and collaboration at the local level, demonstrating how communities can come together to solve problems and make significant advancements in infrastructure.

The extension of broadband infrastructure in rural areas symbolizes a political statement of confidence and solidarity in connection. It emphasizes the need for equal access to resources and services, regardless of geographical location, and represents a step towards bridging the digital divide.
