Government to Use Satellite Internet Providers as Temporary Solution for Poor Connectivity

The Malaysian government has decided to utilize the services of satellite internet providers, including Starlink, to address the issue of poor internet access in certain areas. While long-term solutions are being implemented, this temporary measure is seen as effective due to its plug-and-play nature, fast internet speed, and reasonable pricing.

The use of satellite internet is being considered particularly for the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) in areas lacking adequate connectivity. The government is also exploring the possibility of expanding this technology to schools and health clinics in Sabah and Sarawak, with discussions currently underway with the Health Minister, Education Minister, and Rural and Regional Development Minister.

In July, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced plans to install 40 satellite internet devices from Starlink at higher education institutions nationwide. This initiative aims to assist students who have faced challenges in their studies due to unreliable internet connectivity.

Additionally, several telecommunication service providers will be offering a 5G Rahmah internet package at a more affordable price. The base price will be RM60 for 60GB, with potential variations in terms of lower prices or higher data capacity by different companies. This package, which includes a smartphone 5G data device bundle plan, is set to be implemented on August 31.

These measures highlight the government’s commitment to addressing the issue of poor internet connectivity in Malaysia. By embracing satellite internet technology and offering affordable 5G packages, they are taking steps to ensure that all citizens have access to reliable and high-speed internet services.
