Globalstar Reports Promising Growth in Business for IoT Devices

Globalstar, the operator behind Apple’s satellite-enabled SOS app, has announced a 50% increase in quarterly sales compared to the previous year. The company made nearly million in the three months ending June 30, with a significant portion coming from wholesale capacity service revenues driven by Apple’s use of its satellites for iPhone emergency messaging.

Globalstar is also seeing growth in its commercial Internet of Things (IoT) business. It earned million in this sector, a 6% increase from the same period last year. The company intends to expand its IoT services by introducing two-way connectivity before the end of 2023. Currently, its IoT services rely on one-way connectivity for tracking and monitoring purposes in areas with poor or no terrestrial network coverage.

Apple is assisting Globalstar in funding the deployment of 17 satellites to replenish its low Earth orbit fleet in exchange for 85% of the satellite capacity for its emergency messaging needs. The remaining 15% will support a significant increase in commercial IoT subscribers.

Analysts predict that this remaining capacity can accommodate a fifty-fold increase in the number of commercial IoT subscribers. Globalstar has already installed half of the infrastructure needed for the two-way IoT service and plans to begin beta services with key customers later this year.

Additionally, Globalstar is making progress with its next-generation satellites, which are scheduled for launch in 2025. The company expects to raise its revenue from 0 million to 0 million for 2023, indicating a 35% to 55% increase compared to 2022. It also anticipates devices capable of using its Band 53 frequencies to reach hundreds of millions by next year through partnerships with terrestrial partners and regulators worldwide.

Globalstar has resolved its supply chain issues, allowing the production of its legacy Spot GPS and messaging devices to proceed as planned. With the expectation of an increase in subscriber numbers, the company remains optimistic about its future earnings.
