GCI Brings 5G Mobile Service to Unalaska, Alaska

This week, GCI, Alaska’s largest telecommunications provider, announced the successful launch of 5G mobile service in Unalaska. The upgrade, along with the introduction of voice over LTE (VoLTE) mobile service, was made possible by a .9 million investment from GCI.

Unalaska residents can now benefit from lightning-fast data speeds and more reliable voice service, in addition to the 2.5 gig internet speeds that were introduced by GCI in the community last year. Unalaska, known for being one of the most remote communities in the nation and home to Dutch Harbor, a leading fishing port, is situated over 4,000 miles away from New York City, yet enjoys better connectivity.

According to Jenifer Nelson, GCI’s Director of Rural Affairs and a native of the region, the community has been eagerly awaiting improved wireless service. The upgrade is considered a significant milestone, as GCI has been working for years on a strategy to enhance service in the Aleutians. The Aleutians Fiber Project, an 800-mile subsea fiber project initiated by GCI, played a crucial role in laying the foundation for the wireless service upgrade and bringing high-speed internet to the community.

GCI is recognized as the first provider in Alaska to offer true 5G coverage, with its initial launch in Anchorage in 2020, followed by Fairbanks, Palmer, Wasilla, Juneau, Eagle River, and Girdwood. For more information about GCI and its 5G network, please visit their website.
