Finnish Vendor Nokia Partners with Eastlink to Enhance 5G Network

Finnish vendor Nokia has reached an agreement with Canadian cable TV and telecoms company Eastlink to enhance and modernize its 5G network across seven provinces. Nokia will deploy its AirScale portfolio, including its 5G RAN, to improve Eastlink’s mobile experience by boosting data rates and network capacity.

As part of the deal, site expansions and upgrades will take place, with the first location powered by Nokia set to go live this month. Eastlink, a relatively small operator in Canada, has invested approximately 0 million since 2013 to grow its mobile services. The company offers a range of residential, business, and public sector services in seven Canadian provinces, as well as in Bermuda.

CEO Jeff Gillham expressed his expectations that Nokia will cover a significant portion of Eastlink’s mobile RAN over the next few years. Nokia has also partnered with various government entities in Canada to establish an R&D facility focused on the development of various technologies, including 5G.

Nokia’s major rival, Ericsson, has also made significant moves in the Canadian market, entering into a five-year partnership with the country’s government. This partnership involves an investment of over CAD470 million (0 million) into two R&D centers and an intensified research focus on a variety of new technologies.
