Ericsson and Vodafone Ireland Collaborate to Deploy 5G Standalone Mobile Private Network Solution for Irish Rugby Team

Ericsson and Vodafone Ireland have partnered to implement a 5G Standalone Mobile Private Network (MPN) solution specifically for the Irish rugby team. This initiative aims to enhance communication and performance data exchange between coaches and players in preparation for the upcoming 2023 Rugby World Cup in September.

The solution will be deployed at the High Performance Centre of the Irish Rugby Football Union and will be transported to France in a dedicated 5G-connected van for the World Cup. By leveraging 5G MPN technology, coaches, management, and players will have access to additional layers of data and analysis, empowering them with valuable insights.

In the past, the Irish rugby team relied on third-party connectivity options such as standard WiFi, both locally and internationally. However, with the adoption of the 5G Standalone MPN solution, combined with cutting-edge artificial intelligence technology, real-time performance analysis becomes more advanced, thereby improving decision-making capabilities.

This groundbreaking connectivity enables the capture of up to eight high-resolution video streams simultaneously using a network of cameras and a 5G-connected drone. The captured footage is then processed in real-time, generating a wealth of data that offers invaluable insights into team performance and fosters better communication between management, coaches, and players.

According to Sheila Kavanagh, Network Director at Vodafone Ireland, “Our 5G MPN technology is a demonstration of how technology and connectivity innovation can enhance the business of sport and the performance of teams, bringing added layers of data and analysis to coaches, management, and their players.”

John Griffin, Head of Ericsson Ireland, emphasized the significance of 5G technology in providing opportunities for organizations like the Irish Rugby Football Union. He stated, “Our global leadership in 5G technology and accelerated software availability mean the IRFU will be one step ahead of their competitors on and off the field, giving them the best chance of success at an elite level of performance and revolutionizing the future of a key function within the sports industry.”
