Elon Musk Offers Starlink Internet Coverage to Aid Organizations in Gaza

Elon Musk has offered to provide Starlink internet coverage in Gaza in an effort to support connectivity for internationally recognized aid organizations. This announcement was made in response to a tweet by congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who criticized Israel’s decision to cut off communications in the region.

The civilians of Gaza have been experiencing a “communications blackout” since Friday, with aid groups, journalists, and civil organizations losing contact with their personnel on the ground. This lack of communication has made it difficult to call hospitals for help during the ongoing air and ground shelling, and ambulance drivers have resorted to navigating towards explosions to save lives.

Furthermore, the loss of communications has made it impossible to determine the exact number of casualties following the heaviest bombing by Israel. There are concerns that this decision by Israel may indicate the possibility of a larger ground war.

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO), expressed serious concern over the situation, as they have lost touch with their staff, health facilities, and partners in Gaza. Dr. Tedros urged the protection of civilians and immediate humanitarian access.

Elon Musk’s company SpaceX launched the Starlink satellite network in 2019, consisting of over 5,000 installations. In the past, Musk offered Starlink’s services to Ukraine following the Russian invasion.

While there are aid organizations operating in Gaza, such as the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) and the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund (PCRF), it is uncertain if these organizations have the necessary technology to connect to Starlink at this time.
