EM Solutions Completes System Level Test for Telesat’s LEO 3 Transponder

EM Solutions has successfully conducted the first system-level test for a transponder built for Telesat’s LEO 3 demonstration satellite. The satellite, launched on July 18th, features a flexible bent pipe architecture with Ka- and V-band uplinks and the option for downlinking on either Ka- or Q-band.

The transponder was specifically designed to be compatible with Space Flight Laboratory’s DEFIANT platform, a compact smallsat measuring 30x30x45 cm and weighing 30 kg. EM Solutions, based in Brisbane, Australia, utilized its experience in space flight hardware to design and manufacture the communications payload at its headquarters. The company recently expanded its facilities to include an ISO7 clean room and new workstation areas.

EM Solutions has a strong focus on SATCOM terminals operating at X- and Ka-bands and has demonstrated its ability to create custom products for various applications using its microwave expertise. Garth Niethe, Chief Engineer at EM Solutions, expressed gratitude to the team members, suppliers, customers, and the National Space Test Facility at the Australian National University for their support during the tight schedule and global component shortage.

Moving forward, EM Solutions plans to build upon its successful research and development in Q and V bands to explore other applications, utilizing its extensive knowledge in microwave product design and manufacturing.
