Digital Opportunity Listening Session in Winona County to Expand Broadband Access

Engage Winona and the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) are collaborating to host a Digital Opportunity Listening Session in southern Winona County. The session aims to gather feedback and guidance on how to expand access to broadband internet, computers, and technical assistance for all Minnesotans.

DEED has developed a Digital Opportunity Plan that outlines the optimal utilization of a 0 million investment from the federal government, coupled with 0 million from the state legislature. Following consultations with community groups from across the state, the plan has been drafted and is currently available at mn.gov/deed/programs-services/broadband/adoption/.

The listening session seeks to ensure that the final plan caters to the needs of all communities. By partnering with local organizations and incorporating robust community feedback, Engage Winona and DEED aim to create a comprehensive plan that benefits every Minnesotan.

The urgency to expand broadband access is evident in the statistics of the area. Winona County currently has approximately 3,123 households without access to broadband internet, while Fillmore County ranks in the bottom 10 counties for broadband internet access with 3,359 homes lacking access. Additionally, Houston County has 1,486 households without broadband internet access.

Recognizing the significance of internet access in today’s society, Mitch Landrieu, the White House coordinator for the federal funding, emphasized the necessity of delivering this funding. He stated, “We’re delivering this funding because the internet is no longer a luxury, it’s a necessity to fully participate in today’s society.”

The Digital Opportunity Listening Session will be held on September 6 from 12-2 p.m. at the Witoka Tavern and Reception Hall (27999 County Road 9, Winona). Lunch will be available for purchase. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals and organizations to provide feedback and contribute to the expansion of broadband access in the region.
