Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Upgrading Underground Stations with 5G Connectivity

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is taking steps to strengthen mobile connectivity by introducing 5G technology at all 69 of its underground stations. The goal is to ensure seamless connectivity and prevent poor signal quality for passengers travelling through the underground stretch.

Currently, 29 underground stations have already been upgraded with the new 5G system, and work is underway to implement the infrastructure at the remaining 40 stations and associated tunnels. The underground network of the DMRC spans 102.4km out of its total network of 390.1km.

The introduction of 5G services at these underground stations will allow passengers to enjoy uninterrupted high-quality streaming and seamless connectivity for their devices. Real-time updates and efficient online transactions will also be easily accessible. The aim is to enhance mobile connectivity, reduce call drops, and ensure a smooth experience for passengers while travelling within the underground metro system or at metro stations.

DMRC is in the process of requesting telecom service providers such as Airtel, Jio, and Vodafone to provide 5G connectivity at these underground stations. The installation of cables and equipment for 5G mobile connectivity is expected to be completed within five months.

The installation process presents a challenge, especially in the underground sections. This work must be carried out during limited time windows, primarily during night hours, in order to avoid any disruptions to passenger services.

Currently, the entire metro network, including the Airport Express Line, provides successful 4G mobile services. DMRC has already established a robust infrastructure across its network to ensure uninterrupted mobile and data services. This infrastructure includes telecom towers, in-building solutions (IBS), and small cells.

IBS helps improve mobile connectivity, especially in underground areas or within buildings, with the capacity to support up to 5G technology. So far, IBS has been installed in 29 underground metro stations. Around 240 telecom towers have been set up along elevated corridors to enhance mobile coverage in the surrounding areas within a 250-meter range. Small cells have also been deployed to boost mobile coverage within a 100-meter radius of the pillars in the Airport Express Line, which passes through ridge and defense areas lacking sufficient towers, potentially impacting signal quality.

DMRC is committed to continuously improving and updating mobile connectivity across its network, particularly in its underground stations, providing passengers with the most advanced signal standards.
