The Australian Antarctic Division is seeking public comment on a draft Initial Environmental Evaluation for the Denman Terrestrial Campaign (DTC) Operational Support. The division proposes to provide planning support, logistics, and management of satellite field camps at Edgeworth Davis Base (EDB), Bunger Hills, in the 2023/24 and 2024/25 seasons.

The evaluation outlines the potential environmental impacts of the proposed activities during these seasons, including:

– Carrying out necessary groundworks, such as clearing small pathways, sleeping tent sites, and helicopter landing areas.
– Installing temporary communications infrastructure.
– Installing temporary storage tanks for drinking water and greywater.
– Delivering and moving cargo using fixed-wing and twin otter aircraft.
– Delivering fuel.
– Using twin-engine helicopters to transport personnel to sampling sites.
– Setting up and managing satellite field camps within 150km of EDB.

The Australian Antarctic Division welcomes public comments on the environmental impacts of these activities. They specifically encourage suggestions for additional and specific measures to reduce the proposal’s environmental impacts.
