Busek’s BHT-350 Hall-effect thrusters successfully operating on OneWeb satellites

In-space propulsion specialist Busek has announced that over 100 of its BHT-350 Hall-effect thrusters are currently operating in orbit on OneWeb communications satellites. OneWeb is Busek’s largest customer for these thrusters, which are used for electric orbit-raising, collision avoidance, and station-keeping.

Previously, OneWeb purchased thrusters for their satellites from the Russia-based electric propulsion company EDB Fakel, as well as from Busek. However, Western sanctions imposed on Russia due to the war in Ukraine prevented OneWeb from continuing to buy thrusters from Fakel. As a result, Busek increased its production to meet OneWeb’s demand.

The successful on-orbit commissioning of the BHT-350 thrusters on 80 OneWeb satellites earlier this year validated Busek’s supply chain, manufacturing, quality, and test approaches. This achievement demonstrates the company’s capability to develop and deliver novel satellite propulsion technologies.

Busek’s vice president, Peter Hruby, expressed gratitude to the teams at Airbus OneWeb Satellites, Airbus, and OneWeb for their efforts in reaching this milestone. Hruby also mentioned that all of the thrusters are operational based on the data obtained so far, which is a positive outcome.

The OneWeb order has significantly contributed to Busek’s decision to double its production capacity. In addition to supplying thrusters for OneWeb satellites, Busek is also manufacturing 6-kilowatt Hall-effect thrusters for the NASA lunar Gateway Power and Propulsion Element, which is being built by Maxar Technologies.

This achievement not only demonstrates Busek’s expertise in developing and manufacturing satellite propulsion technologies but also highlights their ability to meet the demands of major players in the space industry like OneWeb and NASA.
