Amazon Plans to Launch Internet Satellites on Different Rocket to Avoid Delays

Amazon.com Inc is set to launch its first pair of prototype internet satellites for their Kuiper program. The satellites, which are part of Amazon’s plan to offer global internet coverage from space, were originally scheduled to be launched aboard ULA’s new Vulcan rocket. However, due to delays in Vulcan’s development, Amazon has decided to switch rides and will now launch the satellites on a dedicated Atlas V rocket from United Launch Alliance (ULA).

The targeted launch date for the satellites is September 26. Amazon aims to deploy a total of 3,200 satellites for its Kuiper internet network by 2026, and the company faces a regulatory deadline to have half of them in orbit by that time. The delay with Vulcan’s launch prompted the switch of rides for the satellites to avoid missing this deadline.

In addition to competing with SpaceX’s Starlink network, Amazon has set a goal to invest billion into the satellite internet endeavor. The company has already secured 83 launches in 2022, making it the largest commercial launch procurement ever. The Atlas V rocket, which will be used for some of these launches, has been a reliable workhorse for ULA, being used in major science missions for NASA and national security missions for the Pentagon.

ULA has stopped selling the Atlas V rocket and has 19 more missions left before its retirement. The company has no plans to order more engines for the rocket, which previously used Russian-made RD-180 engines. It is currently unclear whether the September launch will count as one of the nine that Amazon had previously procured.

By launching internet satellites from space, Amazon aims to expand its web services and establish a strong presence in the satellite internet market.
