AI Will Augment, Not Replace, Jobs: IBM Report

A new study by IBM reveals that the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) is affecting business models and job roles in companies. However, the study suggests that people should not fear AI technology, but rather leverage it for their own benefit.

The IBM report analyzed data from two previous studies, one involving 3,000 C-level executives across 28 countries and another involving 21,000 workers in 22 nations. The results showed that AI will bring about changes in the workforce and businesses, but not necessarily for the worse.

The executives surveyed estimated that 40% of their workforce will need to undergo reskilling within the next three years due to AI implementation. This accounts for a substantial portion of the global workforce, with World Bank statistics indicating that it could amount to 1.4 billion out of the 3.4 billion people worldwide.

Despite this, 87% of the executives expect generative AI to augment job roles rather than replace them. IBM’s research reveals that tech adopters who successfully reskill to adapt to technology-driven job changes experience an average revenue growth rate premium of 15%. Additionally, those who focus on AI see a 36% higher revenue growth rate compared to their peers.

IBM emphasizes that AI should not be seen as a replacement for humans, but rather as a tool utilized by people. The report states, “AI won’t replace people—but people who use AI will replace people who don’t.”

The study also highlights a shift in the skills required of the workforce. Technical skills that were once prioritized, such as proficiency in STEM, are now of lesser importance. Tools like ChatGPT allow workers to accomplish more with less specialized knowledge. Instead, there is now a greater emphasis on people skills, including team management, effective communication, and adaptability to change.

In conclusion, the IBM report suggests that AI will augment job roles rather than replace them. It highlights the importance of reskilling to adapt to technology-driven changes and emphasizes the need for individuals to leverage AI for their own gain.
