A growing army of hundreds of search and rescue personnel in Maui have combed through the burned ruins in the aftermath of the wildfires, with more than a third of the burn areas being searched so far, according to Maui authorities. The death toll has reached at least 111, with some victims being children, reported Maui Police Chief John Pelletier. The scale and impact of these wildfires are unprecedented, with Pelletier stating that the size, number, and volume of the fires have never been seen before. However, the search efforts are hampered by the difficulty in identifying the remains, as they are mostly unrecognizable and fingerprints are rarely found.

Hawaii Governor Josh Green stated that there are probably still over 1,000 individuals unaccounted for.
