Vodafone Resolves Capacity Issues for Broadband Customers

Some of Vodafone’s broadband ISP customers, particularly those on Openreach’s gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, have been experiencing capacity problems, limiting their package speeds to 200Mbps. This issue has been ongoing for almost two years. However, it appears that the problem may have finally been resolved.

Back in March 2022, multiple Vodafone fixed-line customers from different locations reported a consistent speed limit of 200Mbps, despite Vodafone offering plans of up to 900Mbps. Other providers on the same Openreach network were able to offer faster speeds. It is believed that this issue may have persisted for over two years in some areas.

Vodafone confirmed that certain parts of their network were experiencing speed restrictions at 200Mbps. They explained that they had chosen to deliver a smaller cable link instead of delaying the capacity upgrade, in order to ensure that customers could still access fibre, albeit at a lower speed, rather than only offering the slower FTTC (VDSL2) tiers.

Openreach’s Cablelink (Ethernet) solutions are responsible for data capacity between their fibre headend and an ISP’s equipment. Installing a new circuit can take around 33-35 working days.

Despite the ongoing issue in some areas, it was confirmed that several locations that were previously affected had the problem resolved. However, some customers are still reporting the same issue after waiting for nearly a year and a half.

Vodafone has now confirmed that the underlying issue in the identified locations has been resolved. They have updated their website to reflect the available speeds of up to 900Mbps and are informing customers in these areas about the upgraded service.

However, it’s important to note that there may still be other locations experiencing the same problem. Customers in affected areas are encouraged to provide their local postcodes to bring it to Vodafone’s attention.

If customers have been waiting a significant amount of time for a fix, it may be worth considering switching providers.
