Vodafone Idea Successfully Tests 5G Services in Pune

Vodafone Idea has conducted successful tests of 5G services in Pune, India, across both the 26 GHz mmWave and 3.3 GHz mid-bands. The tests were conducted at Ghole Road, Pune, in order to meet the minimum rollout obligations set by the Department of Telecommunications. The testing was completed on August 16, 2023, by Maharashtra LSA Pune.

During a recent earnings call, Vi CEO Akshaya Moondra mentioned that the company will miss the minimum rollout obligations in 15 out of the 17 circles it acquired spectrum in during the July 2022 5G spectrum auction. Moondra also explained that there are liquidated damages applicable in these circles, amounting to approximately Rs 12-13 crore over a period of 26 weeks.

Bharti Airtel has announced that it has completed MRO (meeting roll out obligations) in all 22 circles for the 26 GHz band. Reliance Jio has also completed MRO across all telecom circles. Adani Data Networks is the only company yet to meet the obligations.

The Department of Telecommunications has laid down the roll out obligations for both the 26 GHz band and the mid-bands. These obligations state that a company must commercially launch service in each of the three metros and at least one city in each of the 22 telecom circles by the end of the first year or phase 1.

Overall, Vodafone Idea’s successful testing in Pune brings it closer to meeting the mandated rollout obligations, while other telecom companies have already completed their obligations in various circles.
