Vodafone Germany Expands 5G Coverage to 90% of Population

Vodafone Germany has announced an increase in its 5G network coverage, with 90% of the population now within range. This represents a significant jump from 66% coverage at the same time last year. The operator’s 5G network is now available to a total of 74 million people, with half of them having access to standalone (SA) infrastructure.

Vodafone launched its 5G network in 2019 and claims that its deployment is progressing at a faster pace than any other mobile network before it. The company states that next-generation access is now the norm in both urban and rural areas.

According to Vodafone, the average 5G customer now consumes more than 3GB of data per month, which is a 50% increase compared to the previous year. The operator also reports that 5G data traffic has tripled and now accounts for a larger proportion of its total data traffic.

As part of its network expansion efforts, Vodafone has completed updates to 14,200 locations, involving over 43,000 antennas. Out of these sites, 4,300 are equipped with SA 5G. Additionally, the company has added 5,500 new sites in 2023, although these include both 4G and 5G infrastructure.

These network improvements come as Vodafone Germany is working to address declines in its service revenue. In the first quarter of fiscal year 2024, mobile service revenue dropped by 1.9% year-on-year to €1.2 billion. Vodafone hopes that its expanded coverage and ongoing network upgrades will help reverse this decline.

Overall, Vodafone Germany’s efforts to expand its 5G network coverage are making significant progress, bringing high-speed connectivity to more people across the country.
