Vietnam Proposes Blocking Internet Access for Users

Vietnam, known for blocking online content critical of its one-party state, is considering a new measure that would go even further by blocking users from accessing the internet. The government has drafted rules that would allow internet service providers (ISPs) to disconnect individuals who share illegal content. These rules could be put into effect as early as this year.

If implemented, this move would further restrict web access in Vietnam, where approximately 1,000 websites, including those of the BBC and Freedom House, are already blocked. It is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to control online dissent and maintain strict control over information flow.

By blocking users directly, Vietnam aims to tighten its grip on the internet and prevent the spread of content that challenges its one-party regime. The government frequently employs censorship tactics to maintain its authority, including blocking access to social media platforms and news websites that report critically on the state.

This proposed measure raises concerns among activists and human rights organizations, who argue that it would further suppress freedom of expression and limit access to information. The internet has long been seen as a crucial platform for dissent and alternative voices, and such limitations would stifle political discourse and impede citizens’ access to diverse viewpoints.

The exact implementation and scope of these rules are yet to be determined. It is unclear how ISPs would identify and enforce content deemed illegal, and how individuals’ internet access would be restored once disconnected. Nevertheless, if put into action, this measure would significantly curtail internet freedom and exacerbate censorship in Vietnam.
