Viavi Introduces NTN and HAPs Network Testing for 5G and 6G Satellite Communication

Viavi Solutions Inc. (VIAVI) has announced the availability of base station and end-to-end testing that supports Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) and High Altitude Platforms (HAPs). This is in response to the increasing role of wireless technologies in augmenting traditional terrestrial communication networks, with satellite communications playing a crucial role in providing comprehensive coverage.

The VIAVI TM500 and TeraVM test platforms have been designed to validate the conformance, performance, and reliability of gNodeBs and entire networks operating under the unique service link conditions of NTN and HAPs networks. The introduction of 3GPP Release 17 specifications has formally brought support and guidelines for NTNs, with future releases expected to further refine the standards. These specifications will enhance the performance of NTNs and enable them to converge with terrestrial telecoms networks, providing support for existing 5G mobile handsets and chipsets.

Viavi’s analysis suggests that the growth in satellite communications will result in approximately 30,000 new satellites orbiting the Earth, significantly expanding the potential of NTNs to offer universal coverage. However, satellite communication in 5G introduces a new level of complexity for testing. NTNs need to be reliable in coping with the distance, speed, and mobility of satellites, HAPs, and User Equipment (UE), while still delivering optimal performance.

The testing solutions offered by VIAVI not only emulate different UE mobility and fading profiles but also account for the large doppler shifts caused by fast-moving satellites and airborne platforms. The TM500 can emulate a high volume of devices, new mobility patterns, signal propagation delays, and other unique NTN conditions to validate the base station prior to non-terrestrial deployment. On the other hand, TeraVM emulates the core network and is ideal for early functional tests, including 3GPP protocol testing, in both regenerative and transparent architectures.

VIAVI’s focus extends beyond base station validation. They also offer test scenarios for testing and optimizing the network end-to-end. These scenarios use a real core to validate the performance and reliability of the entire network, providing a comprehensive approach to ensure the success of NTN and HAPs deployments.

According to Ian Langley, Senior Vice President of the Wireless Business Unit at VIAVI, NTN networks offer new opportunities and partnerships for mobile and satellite operators. They have the potential to provide connectivity to underserved and over-populated areas and support mission-critical applications. However, in the rush to deploy these networks, it is crucial to conduct reliability, stability, and performance testing to ensure their success.

VIAVI is a global provider of network test, monitoring, and assurance solutions for various industries, including communications service providers, hyperscalers, equipment manufacturers, enterprises, government, and avionics. Alongside their customers and partners, VIAVI aims to find innovative ways to solve real-world problems.
