Verizon has announced that it is gaining early access to a portion of the C-band spectrum, four months ahead of schedule. This move will accelerate Verizon’s deployment of 5G, providing better performance in areas that already have 5G coverage and allowing for faster implementation in regions not yet served.

The C-band spectrum, which ranges from 4-8 gigahertz, is ideal for 5G technology. Higher frequencies can carry more data but have limited reach, while lower frequencies can travel farther but carry less data. Verizon acquired access to this spectrum through an FCC auction in 2021, investing .9 billion for the block of radio spectrum.

However, much of the C-band spectrum was already in use by satellite companies, causing a delay in its availability. While waiting for the spectrum to be cleared, Verizon was given a 60 megahertz slice to start building its offerings. But now, with early access to the full allocation, Verizon can save costs and speed up its 5G deployment.

With this development, Verizon’s 5G service has been made available to over 222 million people in 359 markets. Additionally, 40 million households now have access to Verizon’s Home Internet, and 384,000 new customers have subscribed to Verizon’s Fixed Wireless Access products (both LTE and 5G) in Q2. The total number of Verizon Fixed Wireless Access customers has reached 2.3 million.

According to Joe Russo, EVP & President of Global Networks and Technology for Verizon, the early access to the C-band spectrum puts them ahead of schedule, making 5G Ultra Wideband available to more Americans. He also mentioned that deploying more spectrum on their network will increase capacity for customer connectivity.

Verizon’s early access to the C-band spectrum signifies a significant milestone in its 5G deployment plans. This move will facilitate improved coverage, faster speeds, and enhanced connectivity for customers across the country.
