U-blox and ORBCOMM Partnership to Connect Devices Anywhere

U-blox and ORBCOMM have partnered to develop solutions for the convergence of terrestrial and satellite IoT communications markets. Through this collaboration, u-blox will integrate support for ORBCOMM’s satellite communication protocols into its UBX-R52/S52 LPWA modem SoC. This integration will result in a chipset that is smaller, less complex, and offers dual connectivity at a lower cost. The chipset will be used in future u-blox module products, enabling connected solutions anywhere in the world.

The partnership aims to expand the addressable market for IoT applications, including remote locations without reliable cellular coverage. The UBX-R52/S52 chipset is designed for IoT applications with long lifecycle needs, making it suitable for asset tracking. By integrating satellite protocol support alongside cellular protocols, the collaboration between u-blox and ORBCOMM will provide customers in the supply chain, heavy equipment, and agriculture industries with ubiquitous coverage, device simplicity, reliability, and longevity.

The partnership between ORBCOMM and u-blox will benefit various industrial IoT applications such as asset tracking in logistics, retail, and manufacturing, tracking and telematics equipment for agriculture, construction, and mining, livestock tracking, and industrial sensors. The collaboration will help meet the emerging demand for solutions capable of connecting devices virtually anywhere on Earth, including remote locations, areas with poor cellular coverage, and isolated environments like the middle of the ocean.
