The Rise of Remote Work on Superyachts

The COVID-19 pandemic sparked a surge in interest in yachting among the ultra-wealthy as they sought an escape from the world. This interest has continued even as remote work has become more prevalent. According to Richard Lambert, head of sales at Burgess Yachts, mega-rich individuals are now spending more time on their mega-yachts, using them not just for leisure but also for business purposes. Many owners spend up to four months a year on their yachts, effectively running their businesses from onboard.

Improved internet access has played a crucial role in this shift. In the past, it was difficult to work on a yacht due to limited connectivity. However, with the advancement of communications technology, owners now enjoy reliable and fast internet access. This has made it easier for them to stay in touch with their businesses on land, whether through Zoom calls or email. As a result, owners are using their yachts more frequently than ever before.

This change in usage has also influenced yacht design. Yachts now include features to accommodate the day-to-day needs of owners and their families, such as home offices and spaces for leisure activities. With more owners spending time onboard with their families, designs are focused on catering to all generations. Access to the water for water sports and accommodations for retired grandparents are among the features that appeal to younger and older generations alike.

The trend of working from superyachts isn’t limited to owners; it extends to their children as well. The pandemic prompted a demand for connectivity on yachts, with young kids needing to attend Zoom classes while onboard. As a result, superyachts are being outfitted with the necessary technology to support remote education and work.

The appeal of working from a yacht may stem from the mindset of successful business owners who are passionate about their work. Many owners view work as an integral part of their identity and take pride in their businesses. For them, logging off is not an option.

While the number of billionaires owning yachts has declined in recent years, the demand for superyachts remains strong. The growth of billionaires in the United States and the increasing number of superyachts being built indicate ongoing interest in yachting. Additionally, the rise of generative A.I. and technological advancements suggest that remote work on superyachts is here to stay, with the way we work continuously evolving.
