The Enduring Success of Path of Exile: A New Zealand Gaming Phenomenon

Path of Exile, a video game developed by Grinding Gear Games (GGG) in Auckland, New Zealand, has become one of the biggest success stories in the gaming industry over the past decade. Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the game continues to thrive with over a million daily players.

Path of Exile is a dark fantasy role-playing game set in a desolate continent where an island nation exiles its inhabitants. Players choose from various classes and embark on a journey to return to Oriath, either alone or alongside other players worldwide.

GGG’s vision for the game was to create a “lifestyle game” that people would play for a long time. This influenced their development approach, implementing regular updates every 13 weeks to keep players engaged. These updates introduce new characters, gameplay modes, cosmetics, and rebalancing of mechanics. The most recent update, Trials of the Ancestors, was released shortly after the ExileCon event.

Lead designer and managing director of GGG, Chris Wilson, explains that while players may not consistently play the game throughout the 13-week cycle, they often return for each new expansion. This pacing allows players to have time for other activities before being drawn back into the game.

One of the key factors contributing to Path of Exile’s success is its community engagement. GGG actively listens to player feedback and incorporates it into the game’s development process. Additionally, the game’s business model relies solely on “ethical microtransactions,” allowing players to purchase cosmetic items without engaging in controversial lootbox practices.

Path of Exile gained recognition shortly after its full release, receiving accolades such as PC Game of the Year in 2013. With over five million registered players within six months of release, it quickly became a global phenomenon. In 2018, tech giant Tencent acquired a majority stake in GGG, further solidifying the game’s position in the industry.

As the game reaches its 10th anniversary, its enduring success can be attributed to its engaging gameplay, frequent updates, and dedicated community. Path of Exile remains a testament to the passion and talent of New Zealand’s gaming industry, captivating players around the world with its immersive fantasy world.
