The Biden administration is developing a cybersecurity certification program for vulnerable devices

The Joe Biden administration is working on a cybersecurity certification program for online devices and appliances that may be prone to cyberattacks. Known as the US Cyber Trust Mark, this program aims to inform consumers about the security of their smart speakers, baby monitors, fitness trackers, and other connected devices.

Stacey Higginbotham, founder and editor of the Internet of Things newsletter, emphasized the significance of launching the program promptly to bolster national cybersecurity. She explained that as more consumer products become connected to the internet, it is crucial to ensure their security. Higginbotham also noted that security is not only important in preventing large-scale attacks but also for individual consumers who want to protect their networks.

The program is being administered by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). However, Higginbotham raised concerns about the agency’s ability to effectively carry out this role, as the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has prior experience in implementing labeling programs. The specifics of the program, including the security features that will be included in the labeling, are yet to be disclosed.

The goal is to establish rules for router labeling by the end of this year, with the possibility of seeing these labels on devices in early 2022. The full US Cyber Trust Mark, including labels for all other devices, may not be implemented until 2024 or later.

The labeling system will consist of a sticker indicating the US Cyber Trust Mark and a QR code. Scanning the QR code will provide additional information about the device’s security, such as recent security checks and sensor capabilities. However, Higginbotham expressed concern that the program does not address privacy, which is an essential aspect for consumers when purchasing connected devices.

While the program is voluntary, incentives for companies to participate have not been specified.
