SK Telecom to Invest 0 Million in AI Research Vendor Anthropic

South Korea-based telecommunications giant SK Telecom has announced that it will invest 0 million in AI safety and research vendor Anthropic. This investment comes after Anthropic previously raised 0 million in Series C funding led by Spark Capital and received investments from SAP and Cohere.

Anthropic’s approach to AI is focused on an enterprise perspective, setting it apart from OpenAI. The company’s generative AI system, called Claude, is similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. However, Anthropic and Cohere distinguish themselves by utilizing a “bring your own data” approach, which allows enterprises to utilize their own proprietary data rather than relying on public data.

This approach to data security is further emphasized by Anthropic’s enterprise approach to security and addressing issues like LLM hallucinations. The company employs a method called constitutional AI, which helps its LLM determine which queries to answer by evaluating the outputs and using a set of principles.

The SK Telecom investment is particularly interesting because it also signifies the company’s entry into the generative AI market. As part of the investment, Anthropic is expected to develop an LLM specific to telecommunications for the Global Telco AI Alliance formed by SK Telecom, Deutsche Telekom, e&, and Singtel. The goal of the alliance is to create new customer service experiences in telecommunications applications using AI.

However, analysts have expressed skepticism regarding the success of such alliances in the telecom industry. Larger players like AT&T, Verizon, and CenturyLink may already have their AI strategies in place, while smaller companies are more likely to benefit from scaling. Additionally, there is a need for clarity on who will sell the LLM that Anthropic develops for SK Telecom.

Overall, the investment from SK Telecom showcases the continued interest and financial support in the generative AI market and highlights the importance of enterprise-focused approaches to AI development and security.
