Rick Jeanneret, Legendary Buffalo Sabres Broadcaster, Passes Away at 81

Rick Jeanneret, the iconic play-by-play voice of the Buffalo Sabres, passed away on Thursday night at the age of 81. Jeanneret had been with the franchise for an incredible 51 years, making him one of the team’s biggest icons.

With his bombastic style and memorable calls, Jeanneret became a fixture on NHL highlight packages throughout his career. One of his most famous calls was Brad May’s overtime goal in the 1993 Stanley Cup Playoffs, known as the “May Day, May Day” call.

Jeanneret’s broadcasting career began in the 1971-72 season as the analyst for the Sabres’ radio broadcasts. He transitioned to television in 1995 and eventually worked with various partners for both radio and TV broadcasts.

Sabres owner Terry Pegula expressed his condolences and emphasized Jeanneret’s significant impact on the team and the sport. “Rick Jeanneret’s mark on Sabres history extends far beyond the broadcast booth,” said Pegula.

Jeanneret’s enthusiastic and captivating commentary, along with his deep knowledge of the game, endeared him to fans both in Buffalo and across the border. He leaves behind a lasting legacy as one of the most beloved and recognizable voices in hockey.

The Jeanneret family released a statement expressing their sadness and gratitude for the outpouring of love and support. Rick Jeanneret will be dearly missed, but his impact on the Buffalo Sabres and the world of hockey will not be forgotten.
